Offset printing is the most widespread printing technology, providing the highest image quality. Printing is mainly done on paper. The classic offset machine is single‑color. Modern machines range from two to ten colors, with multicolor machines essentially being several single‑color units arranged in sequence and synchronized with each other.

Many of the old masters claim that the most artistic print products are achieved only on a single‑color machine. Color images are produced by combining several colors. Several systems are used for printing color images, all based on overlaying raster screens of the individual colors.

The most widespread system for color printing is the so‑called Fier Farben (four colors), known as CMYK — Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, blacK.
