Sanding with drum machine

Sanding with a drum machine is the primary step in professional parquet treatment. The process is performed using sandpaper mounted on a rotating drum, passing sequentially through sandpapers of different grits – from coarse to fine.

София Паркет This method removes old varnish, eliminates dirt and unevenness, and evens out differences between individual parquet pieces. The floor is thus prepared for fine treatment and subsequent varnishing.

Due to the nature of drum sanding, slight wave patterns or fine scratches may appear, especially on cross-laid parquet. This is normal at this stage and is completely removed during final grinding.

Grinding with disc machine

Grinding with a disc machine is the final and mandatory step for achieving a perfectly smooth and uniform surface. In this method, the sandpaper is attached to a rotating disc, which evenly processes all parquet pieces regardless of their direction.

Several consecutive grindings are performed – from coarse to fine sandpaper, usually in three stages for optimal results. After disc grinding, the floor is perfectly prepared for varnishing or oiling.

From a professional perspective, disc grinding is essential as it eliminates all traces of drum sanding and ensures a durable, strong, and aesthetically pleasing result.

Floor laying

Floor laying is a key step determining durability, stability, and comfort during use. Different technologies are applied depending on the type of flooring and the condition of the subfloor.

София Паркет Laying natural parquet
For quality laying of natural parquet, the subfloor must be flat, smooth, and dry. Parquet mirrors the shape of the floor, so any irregularity or defect in the subfloor leads to future problems. Sanding cannot compensate for a crooked or uneven subfloor, and one main reason for parquet squeaking is poor floor preparation.

Moisture and climate control
Wood is hygroscopic and reacts to moisture by expanding and contracting. Therefore, laying should not be rushed. Assessment is made comprehensively – considering the type and thickness of the screed, drying time, other wet processes, and overall room humidity. It is recommended that the parquet acclimatize in the room for at least 2 weeks before laying.

Dry parquet laying
In dry laying, parquet is placed directly on the floor without glue, relying on tongue-and-groove joints and wedging against walls. It is necessary to:
  • have a perfectly flat and smooth screed
  • leave an expansion gap towards the walls
Wedging with assembly foam is recommended to ensure elasticity with humidity changes. The best pattern is strip-type (planks).

Tongue-and-groove glued laying
In this method, glue is applied inside the joint. As with dry laying, an uneven subfloor causes bouncing and detachment. A 1–1.5 cm gap to walls is required. Disadvantages:
  • cannot be repaired
  • individual sections cannot be replaced
  • with heavy furniture, glue tearing and joint opening can occur
Glue-to-floor laying (most reliable method)
In glue-to-floor laying, glue is applied to the subfloor with a notched trowel, then the parquet is laid on top. Two-component polyurethane glues without water content are used, which:
  • dry quickly
  • are elastic
  • allow laying on a subfloor that is not completely flat
Glue consumption is 1.5 – 4 kg/m² depending on the flatness of the subfloor. This is the most reliable and professional method for laying parquet.

Parquet re-laying

Parquet re-laying involves professionally removing the existing flooring, cleaning and preparing the subfloor (if needed – new screed), and re-installing the same parquet. If the pattern remains unchanged and the parquet is dismantled properly, no new material purchase is needed.

Re-laying without glue is highly ineffective and pointless. Over time, the parquet has already deformed relative to the subfloor, and during repeat dry laying, the following issues occur:
  • increased squeaking
  • instability and movement
  • broken or warped tongue-and-groove joints
  • cracking and crumbling of joints
The only proper and long-lasting approach for parquet re-laying is glue-to-floor with suitable adhesives, ensuring stability, no squeaking, and long service life.

Parquet varnishing

София Паркет Parquet varnishing involves applying a protective varnish coating on a prepared surface to prevent dirt, wear, and make maintenance easier. Varnish can be applied with a roller, brush, or spray, though a roller is most commonly used for even coverage.

Water-based varnishes
Single- and two-component, with:
  • fast drying
  • low odor
  • eco-friendly
  • matte or semi-matte finish
4–5 layers are recommended for reliable protection.

Non-water-based varnishes
Single- and two-component, with:
  • slower drying
  • higher hardness
  • greater load resistance
