All solar energy systems operate on the same basic principles. Solar panels convert solar energy or sunlight into direct current (DC) power, known as the photovoltaic (PV) effect. The direct current (DC) can be stored in a battery or converted by a solar inverter into alternating current (AC) power, which can be used to run household appliances. Depending on the type of system, the excess solar energy can either be fed into the electrical grid or stored in different storage systems – batteries.

The potential capacity of a solar system is measured in kWp (kilowatt peak) – i.e. a 10 kWp system is a system with panels that can produce up to 10 kW DC electricity at maximum sunlight. Electrical energy is measured in watt‑hours (Wh) (1 kWh is 1000 Wh). The amount of electricity that your solar system produces or is able to produce over a given period of time is also measured in kWh. The amount of energy a solar system can generate depends on the location of the system and, more specifically, on the solar irradiation that this location receives.
