LYMPHEDEMA TREATMENT

Lymphedema treatment – recovery and rehabilitation through the manual lymphatic drainage procedure.

Edema is a consequence of disrupted balance in the transportation of intercellular fluid, resulting in abnormal accumulation of water in the tissues. Chronic lymphedema is a pathological condition responsible for the lasting and progressive increase in the volume of the limbs (and sometimes the body) due to lymphatic stagnation caused by various changes in the lymphatic system.

How does MLD work?

The therapeutic effect of manual lymphatic drainage lies in its multifaceted impact. After MLD, swelling decreases, pain is reduced, and skeletal muscles relax. These diverse effects explain the wide range of therapeutic possibilities of the procedure.

The duration of this type of lymphedema treatment with MLD is between 30 minutes and one hour. Between 10 and 20 procedures are performed daily, followed by maintenance therapy 1–2 times per week. After 6 months, the treatment course is repeated.

Massage is the manipulation of superficial and deeper layers of muscles and connective tissue using various techniques to improve function, assist in the healing process, reduce muscle reflex activity, suppress motor neuron excitability, promote relaxation and well‑being, and serve as a recreational activity.

Massage involves applying pressure to the body — structured, unstructured, stationary, and/or moving — performed manually or with mechanical devices. Target tissues may include muscles, tendons, ligaments, and lymphatic vessels. Massage can be applied with hands, fingers, elbows, knees, forearms, or feet.

PRESSOTHERAPY

Pressotherapy/compression therapy devices SC‑2004‑OC / SC‑2008‑OC are pneumatic compression systems designed for primary or complementary treatment of primary or secondary lymphedema. They are also intended for supportive or alternative treatment of venous insufficiency and chronic venous stasis ulcers associated with venous insufficiency, as well as general treatment of limb swelling. The devices are suitable for use both at home and in hospitals and specialized centers.

Pressotherapy is a detoxifying procedure that helps the body eliminate toxins through lymphatic drainage. It is widely used in medicine due to its antispasmodic effect, which is applied in the treatment of varicose veins and postoperative swelling. It is also recommended as a method to improve blood circulation and lymphatic flow.
