The durability of the coating depends on its type, application and operating conditions. Its lifespan is influenced by contact with hard or soft materials, as well as working temperature. When in direct contact with chemicals, aqueous solutions or liquids, the coating is practically everlasting.
Properties
PTFE is listed in the Guinness World Records as the material with the lowest friction — static and dynamic — 0.02, comparable to wet ice sliding on wet ice. Ceramic coatings are considered its successor, offering improved performance, applications and characteristics.
- Used as non‑stick coatings for pans, pots and other kitchen equipment. PTFE has extremely low chemical reactivity and is used in containers and pipes for storing highly reactive chemicals.
- It has excellent electrical properties, including at microwave frequencies, making it suitable for cable insulation, connectors and more. Combined with its high melting point, PTFE is more efficient than polyethylene, which melts easily and is used in low‑cost applications.
- With its low thermal conductivity, these coatings act as effective thermal insulation. They do not ignite or burn and withstand both high and low temperatures.
