CATARACT

An eye disease that ranks first in the world as a cause of blindness — fortunately, the process is reversible — after surgery, vision is fully restored.

Generally speaking, the cause lies in the thickening and clouding of the natural lens with age, as well as changes in its elasticity, resulting in difficulty reading and the need for glasses.

Chemical modification of lens proteins, especially oxidation, leads to progressive pigmentation — the lens becomes yellow or light brown.

Due to metabolic changes, the nucleus becomes hard — the well-known aging process — and thus the vision problems mentioned above.

The only way to fully restore vision is to surgically remove the clouded lens and replace it with an artificial intraocular lens.

GLAUCOMA

Until recently, glaucoma (green star) was considered a purely ocular disease, progressing with reduced vision due to optic nerve damage caused by high intraocular pressure. It is most common in older individuals (over 60), but according to WHO, all patients over 40 should undergo annual intraocular pressure screening. Glaucoma in younger people is rarer, but not impossible. The disease leads to irreversible vision loss and, in many cases, complete blindness.

According to modern concepts, glaucoma is not viewed as a single disease, but as a group of neurodegenerative disorders (glaucomas), progressing with optic nerve damage (optic neuropathy) and characteristic changes in the visual field.
